Pots of showy Vandas. The genus Vanda has a large number of species and also hybrids which are grown commercially for the cut-flower trade.

This is how I always remember Taiping - majestic Rain Trees with their branches sweeping down to the water's edge.

By the way, the last movie shown at that wooden Pokok Assam cinema was probably South Pacific Smile At that time Mitzi Gaynor was considered really sexy. And the "coconut dance" performed by the male sailors was almost pornography ..... in those days.

My last visit to Pokok Assam was a very sad occasion back in the 8th of Feb 1962 at the time of the fire when 260 people where made homeless when the fire destroyed 12 shop houses and 6 homes, Most of the houses where made from planks, Zinc and Atap. Two Fire engines from Taiping fought the Blaze for over an hour and another came from Kuala Kangsar 16 miles away. Plus members of the 28th Commonwealth Brigade Army Units in Taiping plus 200 men from the Royal Malay Regiment helped with the fire fighting and the rescue work. Luckily no one was injured, most of the fire victims from 39 families were accommodated in the Chinese Temple in Coronation road and the local community hall and others stayed with friends.
My lasting memories of this time was the great kindness the poor victims showed to us Troops involved in the rescue that terrible day as they rushed around tending to our minor wounds from exploding Glass glass from pop bottles etc.As I rested at the side of the road after being hit by flying glass a very old dear Chinese Lady handed me a ice cold Coke and tended my Minor wounds she couldn’t Speke English and I couldn’t understand Chinese but her kind actions done the talking for her. Later on I saw the same old Lady sifting through the remains of her house looking for salvage from the fire and all she managed to get was an old distorted teapot, my heart went out to her that day. I was a volunteer fire fighter with 2 infantry workshops REME on the Kamunting Road at that time.
