In the 60's and 70's the Taiping Railway station was a very busy place and several passenger trains would go thru it. Today sadly its in shambles and only two passenger trains go thru itin a day. The north to south and the south to north Xpress Rakyat. The toilets stink to the high heavens and very dirty and unhygenic to say the least.My father was the station manager in the early 60's and took pride in keeping the station clean and bright. I was in Taiping last July and was appaled to see this once historic station going to ruins. Interesting though the little candy store still remains where my brothers and I would go to get candy and put it on my dad's name. he would settle the bill at the end of each month when he got paid.Many of the smaller station south of Taiping that my dad served got face lifts except Taiping. I sometimes wonder if Taiping Station can withstand a strong gale force monsoon. The corrugated tin roof is so rusted in many places and the waiting rooms are all closed. Its a real shame that the Taiping Town Council has not petitioned the Malaysian Railways to take some action to rehabilitate this historic station.Yet it is still a great experience to take the Express Rakyat from KL to Butterworth.
