A bit of history from Gadzy who was formerly with the British Army stationed in Klian Pau, Taiping.

"It was Saturday in the late months of 1961, When the traffic came to a standstill in Taiping as thousands of Taiping's inhabitants jammed the roads around the Padang to officially say farewell to the 28th Independent Commonwealth Infantry Brigade Group. The Group was moving from Taiping , south to Malacca as part of the redeployment of the overseas land forces.

The farewell was the biggest Military parade ceremony ever seen in Taiping with more than 1,200 troops plus the massed bands of the 1st Royal Australian Regiment, 2nd New Zealand Regiment, and the 1st Battalion the 3rd East Anglian Regiment taking part. In the bright sunshine the Sultan of Perak accompanied by the Brigade Commander Brig. F. G. Hasset took the salute and inspected the Parade. Then came a Flypast by six Austers of 7 Recce Flight who were based at Kamunting , and a 21 gun salute fired by men of the 26th Field Regiment RA.

After the parade the Brigades big guns were displayed, in the Lake gardens the Sultan and Brigadier Hassett toured the stands, inspecting the field guns, infantry weapons and signal equipment and watched the Royal Engineers float huge army rafts on the lake. and demonstrations by 2 infantry workshops REME. The hundreds of children swarming around the displays were treated to sweets and drinks by the Army Catering Corps. In his farewell address , Brig. Hassett said “we have enjoyed our stay immensely and we take with us Happy memories of Peraks generous and friendly people. Your kindness shall remain a memory with us for years to come .”

The Brigade came to Taiping in June 1957 from Penang and played a major role in Anti-terrorist operations. Raised originally for the Korean War. and was reformed in 1955 to assist in the Malayan Emergency.

So here we are 47 years later, and the memories still carry a very fond place in our hearts for Taiping and its people. And thanks to Kayes we have the wonderful opportunity to keep alive our contact with Taiping and its History. So come on everybody join in the fun get posting your stories and comments and spread a little happiness around."
