Once again I have been invited by the organisers of this year's "race to the clouds" to take some pics. This year's event is from 27 to 29 November 2009 when Taiping will be swarmed by 4WDs from 6 countries. All the competitors will be staying at the new Flemington Hotel in the Lake Garden but I will most probably stay at the new Sentosa Villa. Pic above was taken at the 2007 event.
Also check out pics for this year's race at:-

When you take a jeep up to Bukit Larut, it is already dangerous enough with the Govt jeep driver driving carefully. So how about racing up in an attempt to be the fastest one to reach the clouds? Pic below taken at 2007 event.

During the mid-90, we drove a Isuzu Trooper to visit a relative in Lenggong. While drivig along those kampung roads, we encountered some problems with the clutch plate. Since it was a Sunday day, we decided to drive back without repairing the vehicle. The toughest and the most "challenging" was the stretch along Changkat Jering. We reached Ipoh, dropped off our relatives and drove back to KL the same night. Those 4x4 are really "Lasak"!

4WD SUVs like the Range Rover, Mitsubishi Pajero and the Isuzu Trooper were sold by accredited agents in this country from the early 1980s. The Trooper was the first to be marketed here, followed by the Pajeros and then the Range Rovers. When the first Troopers were being driven around KL, many basement carparks had yet to accommodate their height and the entry bars were often too low for these higher than normal vehicles. I know for sure one Trooper broke the bar at the Concorde Hotel carpark because I was in it. Automatic car wash operators also had not adjusted their machines high enough so that these SUVs could pass. I also know about this because one car wash in Fair Park, Ipoh broke the windscreen of my second Range Rover.
I am not sure of the position now but in the 1980s, the Trooper and Pajero had "leaf springs" as the rear suspension and this kind of springs gave them a really bumpy ride, especially for the rear passengers. On the other hand, the Range Rover had "coil springs" for rear suspension and this made the Rangie much more comfortable. However, in the two Range Rovers I had, there was still a good amount of "roll" when cornering hard because of the high suspension. I lowered the suspension with an Australian made modification kit and this solved the problem of too much roll.

The Isuzu Trooper we drove was the second generation of the Trooper. It's true that the entry bars of certain old shopping complexes in KL were too low for those 4WDs. I still remember our Trooper couldn't enter Campbell shopping complex's car park due to the low entry bar at the entrance.
